Yes, I am a dork.

WARNING. THIS IS YET ANOTHER POST ABOUT PERFORMING ARTS.

Considering that's what I spend half of my life doing, I figured it's ok to have 2 posts in a row about my performing arts endeavors. But this time, it's a different aspect of my performing arts life. Wait for it...I can just feel the anticipation building...show choir. I know exactly what you're thinking. Oh God no. Please don't tell me your going to talk about show choir now. That is the lamest topic you could ever pick to blog about. Well friends, guess what? I'm bloggin' about it! So prepare yourselves for an incredibly lame journey into the wacky world of show choir.

One of my best friends in choir's name is Gabby. She and I have become really close these past two years, because we've been in choir together as sophomores and juniors. When we're together around other people (particularly ones who don't do show choir), they get a little freaked out by how we act. Show choir kids are definitely a breed of their own. We're loud and obnoxious and weird and overly confidnet and like to break out in random song and dance. I admit, sometimes I'm not exactly proud to be "one of them", but it's days like today that I couldn't be more proud to be involved in such an incredible experience. Let me give you the brief rundown of how the department works at my school. We have 10 different show choirs at my school, 4 of them co-ed and 6 of them all girls. You audition at the end of each year to see which choir you'll be in for the next school year. The top mixed choir and the top girl's choir are a little different than the rest of the choirs. These two choirs go to competitions in the spring, and at these competitions they each perform a 15 minute "set". These sets consist of crazy hop around dance songs, emotional ballads, the classic musical pieces, and, of course, enough glitter to last Gaga herself two lifetimes. I'm in the top girl's choir, so we have rehearsal every other day during school for an hour and a half, and 3 more hours of rehearsal 2 nights a week. So needless to say, it's quite a commitment.
After weeks of preparing, today we had our first "show and tell" day with the mixed choir. That means we just get together and show each other what we have so far and get feedback from each other. I've heard how much these two choirs bond during competition season, but I didn't really know what that would feel like...until today. The moment we stepped onstage, the other choir went nuts. They cheered for us and clapped after every solo and dance break. It was amazing to know that even though our set is nowhere near perfect yet, they were behind us 110%. Then when they performed, we went wild for them. It was amazing to finally understand how much we will be supporting each other during this season...This was our first day interacting with each other as full choirs, and we became a family instantly.
There are definitely moments when I question why in the world I would put myself through all of this craziness just to sing a few songs. Today, I found out why. Whether or not we bring home the wins this season, I know that I'll leave with something much more valuable than any trophy could ever be.
I love my show choir family.
